Dressmaker Bali vs Clothing Manufacturer: 5 Differences You should Know About

dressmaker bali promoda

Perhaps you are interested in finding a dressmaker in Bali to produce your own fashion designs? Or you need someone to alter your clothes? Who do you need to contact; a dressmaker or a clothing manufacturer?

Actually, both dressmaker Bali and clothing manufacturer can do the job for you. After all, both businesses employ the same work: sewing.

The purpose of this post is to highlight the differences between a dressmaker and a clothing manufacturer. We hope that this post can help you to make a decision about which one you actually need to contact.

1. Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ)

If what you need is to make some new clothes for yourself while you’re in Bali, or altering and mending your existing clothes, then a dressmaker Bali should fit your requirement. There is no order too small for a dressmaker. He/she can accept a minimum order of one piece because the profession is intended to do individual and personalized orders of garments.

But if what you need is a mass production of commercialized clothes, then a clothing manufacturer that offers a full package production is what you need. The manufacturer’s equipment, number of labour employed, workflow, and so on, are meant to work on big orders.

However, different clothing manufacturers may have different minimum order quantities (MOQ). Some accept MOQ as low as a dozen per style of garment, some others only accept MOQ of hundreds per style or even more.

2. The Difference in Production Schedules

A clothing manufacturer works on rigid production schedule. Any delay can have a bad impact on the production schedule. This schedule includes sampling process, shipping dates, payment dates, and so on. A clothing manufacturer will not want to risk this lest they are going to lose customers.

So, you can’t expect a clothing manufacturer to prioritize your order in their production schedule. The clothing manufacturer just cannot do it even if you are willing to pay extra. They would have to readjust many things just to accommodate your requirement.

On the other hand a dressmaker Bali normally has a less rigid production schedule since the orders are normally small and personalized. Some additional overtime work every now and then might be enough to accommodate the change in schedule.

So, with some persuasion (and extra costs), a dressmaker Bali maybe able to change his/her production schedule to prioritize your order. But you can’t expect the same thing from a clothing manufacturing.

3. Unit Cost

Looking for a Low MOQ Clothing Manufacturer?

PROMODA Bali has been working with startups and established brands alike since 2007. We’d love to work with you too!

Because of its higher overhead costs, a clothing manufacturer has to work on big order in order to be efficient (the bigger the order, the cheaper the cost per unit). It can still work on small order, by the way, but then the cost per unit of the order will be expensive.

A clothing manufacturer Bali has to pay higher overhead (fixed) costs in compare to a dressmaker Bali. It occupies bigger working space, employs more staff, uses more machines, pays more taxes, etc. than a dressmaker.

We covered the clothing manufacturing cost estimation in another post. Just a 5 minutes reading of the post would be enough to make you understand better about it.

On the other hand, a dressmaker Bali can be a lot more efficient in working on small orders because the overhead costs are smaller than a clothing manufacturer.

So, if you want to be more cost efficient with an order of a few pieces, hiring a dressmaker Bali is the better option than hiring a clothing manufacturer. But if you want to be more cost efficient with an order in the number of dozens, you should hire a low MOQ clothing manufacturer Bali.

4. Size of the Team

A dressmaker Bali normally employs a small team who do everything. Sometimes this small team comprises one man army.

On the other hand, a clothing manufacturer employs a big team in the complete garment production process. Such team comprises of specialists in pattern making, sample making, cutting, sewing, quality control, packing, etc.

Due to the size of the team involved, it’s only natural that a dress maker Bali is more suited to small and personalized orders, while a clothing manufacturer is more suited for big and mass production orders.

5. Alteration

When you have any ideas for clothing alteration, you can request a dressmaker to do it for you. This is possible because the dressmaker only needs to readjust a few things, including his/her work schedule.

But it is a different story with clothing manufacturer because they normally follow a certain sampling process. Once you approve the samples and sizing charts that they made, you can’t ask them to alter anything because then they need to readjust their production schedule, machines, tech pack, and so on. So, even if the alteration might seem minor to you, it is actually a major one for them.

6. Fabric Sourcing

A Dressmaker Bali doesn’t provide fabrics. He/she use the fabrics provided by their customers. This means you need to source the fabric your self.

Regardless how fun it is to shop for fabrics, as an individual you won’t get the best deals for the fabrics you want. The reason is simple; that is you are buying and getting retail prices.

However, even if sourcing the fabrics yourself is not so financially efficient, you can buy anything by the meter when you find them.

On the other hands, clothing manufacturers know better how to source fabric so they can get better deals than you. Providing that the manufacturer has a good supply chain management, it can also find rare fabrics you won’t find in shops. But the challenge is that when they buy fabrics, they only buy in bulk.
